Island of Secrets and Sacrifice by Deborah Grace White (Sacrificed Hearts Book 4)
Loosely inspired by Beauty and the Beast
The tiny island community where Ember lives has been locked away from the mainland for thirty years, and life flows smoothly because of rigid obedience to the many rules — rules that Ember struggles more and more to follow. When she defies the rules yet again, she suddenly finds herself the next sacrifice to the monster who protects the island.
Haiden has been cursed to appear like a monster, but all he really wants is to be left alone. When Ember storms into his clearing in a long line of damsels thinking to free him, he dismisses her straight away. But Ember doesn’t want to help him — she demands his help in freeing her people.
Can preconceptions and selfish pride be overcome before the true monster wins? Or will these two learn the real meaning of sacrificed hearts?
“Nothing someone else says or does to us can shake us as deeply as the things we find in our own hearts.”
~ Deborah Grace White, Island of Secrets and Sacrifice
I loved the themes in this book, of how “true monsters aren’t always what they seem.” There are also nods to pride and prejudice, as both Ember and Haiden need to face their own prideful thoughts and ingrained prejudices. There’s also some hints of Beauty and the Beast, with the idea of “beauty within.”
Deborah’s writing is always delightful, and I can’t wait to dive into her Singer Tales. This book is related to the series, but you don’t need to read them to enjoy this one. The music based magic is unique and intricate.
