The Unlucky Prince: A Frog Prince Retelling by Deborah Grace White (Once Upon a Prince book 1)

Prince Ari has the worst luck. He spent years as a swan, and even now struggles to fit back into his world. He sets off to seek adventure, with a stop in the neighboring kingdom to visit his sister. But just when he thinks he’s found the adventure he wants, he’s turned into a frog.

Princess Violet has a plan to quell the merchant’s threats: Marry the guild leader’s son. It’s a political arrangement and she knows what she’s sacrificing. That is, until the visiting prince offers something real. Will a casual flirtation make her regret her plans?

This was such a fun story! Ari and Violet both come from large families, and you can see that reflected in how they interact with each other and those around them. I loved how Ari made Violet feel seen and cherished. The romance did feel a bit rushed (the whole story was only a week in length), but it was believable.

I loved the dragons, and would have loved to see more of them. The Unlucky Prince ties in with The Kingdom Tales, so there’s probably more dragons in the other books.

There were so many fun nods to the Frog Prince story, while being a truly unique retelling.
