The Orphan Queen: A Cinderella and Ugly Duckling Retelling by Erika Everest (Kingdoms of Fable Book 0)

The Orphan Queen is a mashup of Cinderella and the Ugly Duckling. Marianne, an orphan, has faced bigotry for years because of her dark skin. A handsome prince falls for her, but she only comes to accept her worth and her beauty when she finally meets other people who look like she does. While on this journey of self-discovery, Marianne also uncovers the key to a dark plot.

I loved the elements of mystery in this story that added layers. Instead of the traditional story of love at first sight, Everest allows her Cinderella to meet Prince Charming before the ball, thereby giving them a valid opportunity to fall in love prior to the fated night. There’s a few elements I wish the author had expanded on, but overall, it’s a beautiful story of love and acceptance.
