Becoming Hook: A Peter Pan Retelling by Mary Mecham (Legends of Neverland Book 1)
James Hook and Peter Pan are best friends, until Tinkerbell points out the truth – Pan is kidnapping children. Hook casts off his life of adventure and eternal youth and fights to return one of the Lost Boys to his family – a fight that costs him his hand.
But one defeat won’t stop Pan, and Hook must do everything in his power to stop him. Even if that means becoming the villain in the eyes of those he so desperately wants to rescue.
“What, you want me to become a pirate?”
This was such a fun take on Peter Pan! I love the twist on who was the true villain. The book is full of vivid characters brought to life with struggles and fears that were so relatable.
Hook and Tink were so cute together, although I would have liked to see a bit more of their relationship. The romance felt a bit jerky, as if we were missing part of their story.
Mecham does a great job of showing someone adapting to life with a limb difference.
